Poker Basics

Depending upon the specific poker variant that you happen to be playing at the moment, the poker hands are complicated by a few things.

  • We’ve discussed “kickers” a bit; these are normally-useless garbage cards that only come into play to break ties. In many poker games, this won’t be an issue…but in Hold’em, where a number of players could very well have the same exact hand, kickers become extremely important.
  • We’ve briefly mentioned “wild cards” which are a specific type of card that can be used as any other card in the deck (or a specific symbol in online slots). so if you have garbage and a wild card, you at least have a pair…and not infrequently it makes the difference between a garbage hand and a flush or straight, a very big difference indeed!
  • lowball” games reverse the scoring, so you’re actually looking to have the worst possible hand. There’s a few different ways to do this, but Razz (the most common lowball game on the net and in poker tournaments) use “ace-to-five” (5, 4, 3, 2, A) as the winning (lowest) hand
  • for an interesting mix, some games use both regular ranking and lowball in a “Hi-Lo” variant. The most common online casino USA hi-lo game is Omaha Hi-Lo, in which you try to make two separate hands, the highest and the lowest (the pot is split between the winners in each category)
  • there are three basic kinds of bets in a poker round, call, check, and raise. Calling simply means that you’re putting in the going amount, checking means that you’re basically “passing” the bet for now, and raising means that you’re moving up the going amount. You can’t always do all of them; for one thing, you’ll rarely see a check in Hold’em, and never in an opening round.
  • there’s also folding. When you fold, you’re taking yourself out of the hand, losing anything that you’ve already put into the pot (but no more). Sometimes it’s the smartest thing that you can do, just like Kenny Rogers says.
